Council staff in the east of the county have been praised for their response during last week’s Storm Éowyn.
ESB, Uisce Éireann and telecommunications workers were also commended for their efforts by councillors at Wednesday’s meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD).
Cllr Martin Scanlon said ‘great work’ was carried out by Donegal County Council’s Area Roads Engineer, Claire McKeever, and her staff.
“That was great work by you and your team to keep roads open over the weekend,” he said.
However, Cllr Scanlon stress, there needs to be a review on the clearing of vegetation from underneath bridges “especially with arches being blocked after the storm.”
Cllr Martin Harley also said ‘great work’ was carried out by roads staff since Friday morning during what he described as a ‘difficult time’.
Cllr Gary Doherty agreed, adding praise should also be given to ESB, Uisce Éireann and telecommunications teams and “anyone else who put the shoulder to the wheel to keep roads open and services running”.
Acknowledging the positive comments from councillors, Ms McKeever said council staff were faced with “very difficult conditions – unprecedented”.
She added that communications were difficult as phone and internet coverage was down.
“Some of the communications issues have still not been resolved,” Ms McKeever told the meeting.
“We did a reasonably good job under the circumstances. Staff were out on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The cleanup is still ongoing as uprooted trees have damaged roads, footpaths and private property.”
