A councillor has suggested that household waste should only be collected once a month in order to encourage more people to use their recycling bins.
The suggestion was made by Cllr Martin Harley at Wednesday’s meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD).
“In the UK, they are only lifting black bins once a month to encourage more recycling,” he said.
“Maybe that’s something we should look at here and put to senior council management.”
In response, Caroline McCleary of Donegal County Council’s Environment Section said Cllr Harley’s suggestion was a ‘brilliant’ one.
However, she added, the council has no Waste Awareness Officer, but hoped the position would be filled sometime this year.
