A local councillor has claimed there is a planning ‘free for all’ in the east Donegal village of Convoy.
Cllr Patrick McGowan made the comment at today’s meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD) during a discussion on planning.
He said Convoy has become ‘overdeveloped’ with housing estates, without the proper infrastructure being put in place.
“Convoy became a free for all after prices rose in Letterkenny during the boom,” Cllr McGowan said.
“We need an Area Plan – people are very frustrated.”
Cllr Dakota NicMheanman agreed, adding she felt there was also too high of a concentration of housing estates there.
“We need to think about what we’re doing in relation to Convoy with all the planning issues,” she said.
“Housing is needed. But, in relation to the Apex Housing Association application, is there really a need for all these houses in Convoy.”
Mr Patsy Lafferty, Donegal County Council’s Director of Housing, Corporate & Cultural Services, said there should be a workshop on the issue of planning in Convoy.
“Just because there is no Area Plan for Convoy, it does not mean applications are not open to assessment,” he added.
Ms Donna Callaghan, Executive Planner, in response, said the meeting was not the appropriate forum to discuss individual planning applications.
