Seventeen power generators are being sent to Ireland from the EU to help with energy outages in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn.
The emergency assistance comes following a request from Ireland under the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism.
Thirteen power generators will come from the European Commission’s strategic reserve, rescEU, while another four generators have been provided by Denmark.
168,000 households and businesses nationwide remain without electricity as of today, with up to 100,000 possibly remaining in the dark until next week.
Electrical repair crews from Austria and Finland have already arrived in Ireland to assist with ESB repair works. Further crews from France and the Netherlands are due in the coming days.
MEP Maria Walsh, a member of the Regional Development Committee in the European Parliament, said that Storm Éowyn is a wake-up call.
“While our immediate focus must be on helping those without power and water, we must also face the fact that extreme weather events such as Storm Éowyn might become the new normal,” said MEP Walsh.
“We need to future-proof Ireland by investing in stronger infrastructure, supporting sustainable farming, and ensuring our emergency response systems are fit for purpose. The time to act is now – before the next storm hits.”
