A Falcarragh woman is recovering in hospital after a devastating fire tore through her home before Storm Éowyn.
Kathleen Barrett and her beloved pet dog are lucky to be alive after a fire broke out in her home on Thursday night.
Kathleen managed to escape the house and has been admitted to ICU in Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment.
As of this week, Kathleen is said to be doing well and will soon be released from hospital.
Her little dog, Collie, was saved by the fire services and is being looked after by a niece.
A community appeal is now underway to support Kathleen in her hour of need.
“She has been left with absolutely nothing not even a pair of socks, it either burned in the fire or is so badly smoke damaged it’s unsalvageable,” says Kathleen’s niece Maeve Barrett in a GoFundMe appeal.
Her family hopes to source a suitable place for Kathleen to stay and recover.
However, Kathleen has limited mobility when it comes to stairs therefore limiting where she can go.
“She is a breast cancer survivor and her health wouldn’t be the best,” said Maeve.
“Kathleen would and has done anything for anyone and it’s just so sad after not long losing her husband to cancer to be left with no home that she shared for most of her life with her husband and little dog Collie.
“So we are reaching out to the public for any small donation that will help to get her back on her feet and hopefully into “her own little corner” in the near future.”
More than €11,000 has been raised for Kathleen overnight. If you wish to donate, please visit: https://www.gofundme.com/f/kathleen-barrett-lost-everything-in-house-fire
