Donegal’s senior hurlers fell just short in their first game of the National Hurling League season yesterday.
They were defeated in a tight contest away to Meath by a score of 2-12 to 1-14.
Both sides swapped the lead back-and-forth in this Division 2 contest, Donegal’s goalkeeper Luke White striking a crucial penalty into the Meath net just after the 10 minute mark, nullifying Meath’s Cian Rogers’ early goal.
Meath held the advantage into the half-time break by a point, an early second-half goal from Jack Regan leaving the Donegal men with it all to do.
In a spirited performance, a run of scores gave them a chance as Donegal grabbed the lead back with just minutes to spare.
However it wasn’t to be, a superb display from Jack Regan and a run of late scores grabbed Meath the win by the finest of margins.
Mickey McCann’s side will look to rebound next weekend in their home League opener against Tyrone in Letterkenny.
