A new Electric Mobility Hub is being proposed for Letterkenny residents to avail of EV cars and bikes.
The ESB are currently in discussions with Donegal County Council regarding the trial of this hub at Justice Walsh Car Park in Letterkenny.
If the trial proceeds, parking spaces will be dedicated two shared electric vehicles (EVs) provided by Enterprise Rent A Car and four shared electric bikes and one shared ecargo bike provided by ESB with Moby.
The cars and bikes will be available for short term rental to the public on a similar basis to other car and bike sharing schemes and will be operated by the ESB and its partners. The proposed trial is to last 2 years.
The plans were put forward to members of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District yesterday.
To make room for the eHub, four car parking spaces in the Justice Walsh Car Park will be replaced by shared Electric Vehicle spaces. A parking area for the shared electric bikes would be located in the green area adjacent to the Justice Walsh Road (pictured above).
Donegal County Council said the pilot would be “mutually beneficial providing a live environment to evaluate how the public would interact with shared electric vehicles and the ehub’s dedicated charging infrastructure.”
Insights from the pilot would be shared to inform plans for the introduction of future electric shared transport in the region.
This scheme is currently also being trialed in Dublin, Waterford, Galway and Sligo.
