A Donegal judge has warned the public to check the details of their insurance policies.
Judge Eiteain Cunningham made her remark at today’s sitting of Letterkenny District Court.
It followed the case of a young man who came before the court for not having insurance for the car he was driving.
The young man said he had full insurance cover to drive his own car but also thought he was covered to drive his mother’s car.
He was stopped driving his mother’s car in Letterkenny last August but it transpired that he was not covered.
The man outlined his case when he represented himself in court.
Judge Cunningham said that she had listened to the man and considered that he had come to Donegal and had met the case fairly.
Because of the circumstances and the fact that the man had no previous convictions, she said she was fining him €100 for not having insurance but was no disqualifying him from driving.
She was also urged “Check your policy because we are finding there are little caveats (with insurance policies).”
