Construction was started on 1,178 homes in Donegal last year – more than double the commencements in 2023.
This is the highest number of annual residential commencements since records began in 2014.
The figure includes 559 one-off dwellings in Donegal.
1,178 commencements equates to, on average, 4 new homes commenced every working day during 2024.
Donegal County Council completed housing units at Trusk Road (19 Units) and Gallows Lane, Lifford (29 Units) in November 2024.
Onsite progress is continuing in areas such as Oranhill Letterkenny (30 units), Meadowhill in Raphoe (11 units), Chapel Road in Dungloe (43 units) and Drumacrin in Bundoran (42 units).
Another five turnkey housing projects with a combined total of 123 units are currently progressing on-site, comprising 21 units in Windyhall, Letterkenny, 14 in Ballybofey, 35 in Donegal Town, 29 in Bunbeg, and 24 in Convoy.
An update is expected from Donegal County Council on the Letterkenny, Ballymacool and High Road flagship projects at a special housing meeting next week.
Nationally, between January and December 2024, there were 60,243 new homes commenced, up 84% from the 32,801 recorded in 2023.
On the national commencement figures, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien said: “Strong figures on home starts in 2024 confirm that a robust stock of new housing is in the pipeline. Government initiatives such as the development levy waiver and the Úisce Éireann rebate have had a positive impact in getting projects off the ground with the ultimate goal of increasing our housing supply to meet housing needs.”
Minister of State for Housing Alan Dillon said: “Increasing supply is critical not only for home owership but also for ensuring more secure and affordable housing options for everyone. The progress achieved this year reflects a collective effort, and it’s vital we maintain this momentum into 2025 and beyond.”
