Donegal Women’s Centre in Letterkenny has launched a unique arts programme for women who are either in or at risk of entering the court system.
The ‘creative reset’ is focused on helping women with their mental health and resilience.
Women are invited to take part in weekly group work sessions, reflect on unhealthy habits, build resilience, and take control of their mental wellness through creative art therapies.
No prior experience in arts is necessary, just an open mind to learn something new. Sessions are delivered over two hours each week and women can attend for as many weeks as they need, with the flexibility to stay longer if required.
Mary Herlihy, Manager of Donegal Women’s Centre, says, “We are deeply aware that women who have come into contact with the criminal justice system or who are at risk of offending face unique challenges. Their experiences often include trauma from childhood, domestic abuse, addiction, mental health struggles, and intergenerational cycles of violence. These factors need to be addressed through tailored, gender informed support, and this programme aims to do just that. Our end aim is for women to have healthy lifestyles, supportive relationships and meaningful opportunities in their life, devoid of offending.”
The programme will be open to referrals from the Probation Service, clients of Donegal Women’s Centre, referrals from social workers, Donegal Domestic Violence Services, An Garda Síochána and direct referrals from the courts. Referrals will also be taken from any woman or a concerned family member who feel they may be at risk of entering the criminal justice system. Referrals will be considered from any other agency as deemed appropriate. Donegal Women’s Centre are encouraging any services that have identified clients who would benefit from this programme to email them for a referral form.
Mary adds, “The Creative Reset Programme is more than just a series of workshops, it’s a transformative opportunity for women to explore their mental health in a new and supportive way. We aim to empower women to break free from cycles of trauma and crime and begin their journey to recovery. We will address interrelated factors that often characterise women’s paths into the criminal justice system and inhibit their progress. Donegal Women’s Centre is committed to making this programme accessible.
“We can offer assistance with travel, childcare costs, and counselling contributions to ensure that no woman is excluded based on financial constraints.
“We also have a counselling service available for any woman who wishes to avail of this service in the Centre. Participants will have the support to share only what they feel comfortable with, with confidentiality and sensitivity prioritised.”
Department of Justice for their ongoing funding of this vital programme in 2025.
“Together, we can help break the cycle and empower women in Donegal to take control of their lives and create a brighter future free from any judicial system,” concludes Mary.
