A man has been given a suspended prison sentence after being caught driving without insurance.
Adam Horvat was handed a five-month prison sentence and put off the road for five years when he appeared before Letterkenny District Court. Horvat was also fined a total of €300.
Horvat, aged 29 and of Gleánn Eadán, Letterkenny, was before the court in connection with an incident on February 12, 2024.
Horvat was charged with road traffic offences, including driving without insurance, driving without a licence, having no tax on the vehicle and failing to produce documents when directed to do so.
Judge Éiteáin Cunningham told Mr Frank Dorrian, solicitor for Horvat, that his client was “very much at risk” given that he has previous for having no insurance.
Mr Dorrian said Horvat is “still a relatively young man” who is now working as a sprayer for a company manufacturing metal shelving.
“He is keeping himself as best as he can,” Mr Dorrian said. “He has done what has been asked of him and he took out a policy subsequent to this”.
Judge Cunningham, noting that the previous was “very relevant”, sentenced Horvat to five months in prison on the charge of driving without insurance. The sentence was suspended for 18 months on Horvat entering a bond to keep the peace and be of good behaviour during that time.
Horvat was also disqualified from driving for five years.
For driving without a driving licence, Horvat was fined €150 and fined €150 for having no tax.
Judge Cunningham warned Horvat that she will not be amenable to the suspension of any further sentence if Horvat appears back before the court.
Mr Dorrian told his client that if he drives a car during the next five years he will be “driving himself to prison”.
