The Durning family’s annual Christmas lights display at their home between Letterkenny and Ramelton has raised more than €2,100 for Little Blue Heroes charity.
Tens of thousands of bulbs, six thousand alone on the roof of the house at Ballyare, also helped raise a substantial sum for the Irish Kidney Association.
Gerry Durning’s home was a huge attraction over the festive season for families and some even came twice!
Sharon and Gerry Durning and the Ballyare Christmas Lights Committee presented a cheque for €2,147 to representatives of the Little Blue Heroes this week.
“A huge thank you to Ballyare Christmas Lights Committee and Sharon and Gerry Durning for their fantastic support of the Little Blue Heroes. We are so grateful,” a garda spokesperson said.
“The grand total of €2,147 was raised from the Christmas lights event in 2024. These funds will be of such benefit to our little heroes in blue and their families. Thank you to all involved for your kindness and generosity.”
It all started with an idea that Tommy Doherty had when he was passing by Gerry’s house one evening as the Christmas lights were going up during the Covid lockdowns.
“I just thought it was so difficult for charities to raise money because of Covid. So I asked Gerry would he be interested in doing something in that way,” Tommy said at the time.
