Shamrock Rovers have secured one of their major transfer targets for the 2025 season with the capture of Donegal goalkeeper Ed McGinty from Sligo Rovers.
According to today’s Irish Independent, manager Stephen Bradley has set his new signing the immediate task of challenging Leon Pohls for the jersey next season as the Hoops look to regain their Premier Division crown.
They are also continuing their chase for European glory, with a Europa Conference League tie against Molde on the way next month, a tie which McGinty will be eligible for.
The Scottish-born, Donegal-raised player was a key performer for Sligo Rovers last term, where he was an ever-present while on loan from Oxford United. McGinty (25) had six months left on his contract with the English Championship club but he was far down the pecking order and unlikely to force his way into the first team.
Sligo were keen to retain McGinty and re-sign him on a permanent basis but the lure of European football with the Hoops was a major factor for him, with the final decision down to parent club Oxford. Once McGinty confirmed on social media on Wednesday that he was leaving Sligo, a move to Tallaght Stadium was inevitable.
For his part, McGinty admitted it was a wrench to depart from Sligo.
“It wasn’t too difficult leaving Oxford, but it was always difficult leaving Sligo Rovers. It’s been a big part of my life so that was a tough part.
“At the same time, Shamrock Rovers is the biggest club in Ireland, what they’ve done in Europe is incredible, so I want to come and help them and improve them. When Stephen rang me, I could sense his level of drive and ambition, and that matches mine. So, in a sense, it was an easy decision,” McGinty said.
