The start of the Downings to Carrigart Greenway is expected to commence before the start of this summer.
Cllr. Declan Meehan has welcomed progress on the proposed project.
He said this is a really welcome development, particularly given how long people in the area have waited on this project to become a reality.
He added “It looks as if real progress is now finally being made. The tendering process is well underway, with a contractor expected to be appointed to the job by the end of this month. Land procurement for the project is also at an advanced stage. All going well, work should start before the summer this year.”
Phase 1 of the project will see the construction of 1.6km of pathway from the entrance to the Rosapenna Pavilion to the junction with local road L1042, just under 1km from Carrigart.
The greenway will be on average 4m wide and will provide space for cyclists and pedestrians alike.
“In a November meeting all Councillors in the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District agreed that Phase 2 of this project should be prioritised for an application to the 2025 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme” Meehan said.
“If that is successful then it should provide the necessary funding for the rest of the project to be completed.”
