Glencolmcille resident Darragh Tyrell is doing a hair-raising fundraiser this New Year in aid of LauraLynn Ireland’s Children’s Hospice.
Darragh, a native of Greystones in Wicklow, is currently living in Donegal with his wife Ann McLaughlin.
Darragh sadly lost his cousin Breda to cancer in September this year. Breda, a beloved woman, mother and wife, was a big advocate for making the world a brighter place, and this fundraiser is Darragh’s way to honour her memory.
Later this month, Darragh will say goodbye to his luscious brown locks, donating his hair to create a wig for children battling illness.
At the same time, he aims to raise vital funds for LauraLynn, Ireland’s Children’s Hospice, which provides support for children from all over the country with life-limiting conditions and their families.
Darragh’s journey with long hair began during the COVID-19 pandemic after a series of less-than-ideal haircuts. He embraced the change and grew to love his flowing locks.
“The hair was getting long, and I was pondering what to do with it,” Darragh explained. “The idea then came about donating but I wasn’t sure on what they needed. Once I checked that the hair would be used to make wigs for sick children the course was set! But the hair needed to be over 14inches long so I made that my new goal!”
His most recent measurement showed his hair had reached 17 inches!
He’s hoping to go for the chop mid January (date to be confirmed).
