The annual Marble Hill New Year’s Day swim has raised several thousand euro so far for the North West Branch of the Parkinson’s Ireland charity.
The little-known organisation was championed by Doe Amateur Swimming Club as the beneficiary of yesterday’s event.
The people who put Parkinson’s Ireland’s name forward were Bernice Alcorn and her friend Judith McKinley.
Both have been diagnosed with the condition and sang the praises of the North West branch of the charity which holds activities for members in Donegal and Sligo.
“We feel we are a forgotten charity and don’t get a lot of funding or publicity,” they told Donegal Daily.
A spokesperson for the swimming club said: “We are delighted to announce that our 2025 New Years Swim was a massive success and what a great way to start the new year. We would like to thank everyone who joined us today, all 229 of you. Without you guys this event would not be a success.”
Bernice and Judith have also set up a GoFundMe page for those who could not make the New Year’s Day swim.
