The Letterkenny Pride group has hit out at some comments made by a local priest yesterday which they described as ‘divisive’ and ‘bizarre’.
We reported that Fr Damien Nejad told the congregation at St Eunan’s Cathedral the family unit is being threatened by society in many ways. He also cited the Enoch Burke contempt of court case as an example of people being punished for taking a stance.
In addition, he claimed that ‘woke culture’ is being imposed whether people like it or not and that families are being harmed by a ‘mixture of ideas from capitalism and communism’.
However, Letterkenny Pride released a statement on their Facebook page saying they disagreed with Fr Nejad in the ‘strongest possible terms’.
“This (yesterday) morning , Fr Damien Nejad spoke to the congregation in St Eunan’s Cathedral about his concerns about marriage equality and gender recognition,” the statement read.
“He also spoke about a bizarre hybrid Communist/Capitalist endeavor to undermine traditional courses of living one’s life. If he had been speaking about Christian values of compassion, understanding, love and respect for the individual, we would be aligned. Unfortunately he was not, and we must disagree with him in the strongest possible terms.”
The group said they wished to reaffirm their commitment to demonstrating the value of diversity in fostering a prosperous society.
“We know that Letterkenny is special because of these values and we also know that most residents of this town are committed to valuing those around them,” they added.
“Rhetoric to the contrary is divisive, dysfunctional and completely at odds with what this town stands for. We are the proof.”
