A decision to grant permission for the construction of an Islamic Cultural Centre in Letterkenny has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála (ABP).
Last month, Donegal County Council gave the green light to Letterkenny Islamic Association Clg for the development at Lisnennan, on the outskirts of the town.
The proposed development would see the construction of a Cultural Centre, consisting of ground floor and first floor mezzanine prayer hall areas (male/female), a coffee dock, sandwich bar, offices, meeting room and kitchenette.
However, that decision has been appealed by local residents on the grounds of traffic hazard and disturbance to the area.
“We have real concerns that as proposed, it will have a detrimental impact on us, our property and the wider planning and development of the area,” they wrote.
The objectors claimed the development would bring significant additional traffic with up to 120 worshipers attending Friday lunchtime prayer.
They also argued that the proposed centre could be considered “over development” in that it comprises two separate buildings of significant scale and height.
