Donegal will be under two yellow warnings in the coming days ahead of a stormy New Year’s Eve.
Periods of heavy rainfall and strong gale force winds are expected throughout Monday and Tuesday.
A yellow alert for rain comes into force at 11am Monday until 11am Tuesday.
Possible impacts include localised flooding, difficult travelling conditions due to heavy rain and reduced visibility.
Meanwhile, a wind alert will be in place from midnight on Tuesday (Monday night/Tuesday morning) until 11am. This alert has been issued for Donegal, Galway and Mayo.
There is a risk of strong fallen branches and trees, debris, loose objects displaced, and difficult travelling conditions. Also at the coasts, there is a risk of wave overtopping due to onshore winds and high seas, particularly during high tide times.
Met Eireann’s national outlook for New Year’s Eve will be “rather windy for much of the day” with widespread rain at first, becoming confined mainly to Munster and south Leinster through the morning with hazy sunny spells and isolated showers developing over the northern half of the country”.
Tuesday night will turn wet and windy overnight as rain continues to extend northeastwards, heavy in places, particularly in the north and west with spot flooding possible.
New Year’s Day will be very windy with “widespread heavy rain at first, clearing southeastwards from most areas through the morning and afternoon but with showery rain will persist in the north and west.”
Temperatures are forecast to fall during the week, turning cold and freezing overnight until the weekend.
