Weather forecasters are warning of a potential storm on the horizon that could make landfall on New Year’s Day in Ireland.
Met Éireann’s current forecasts looking ahead to the new year period show conditions becoming more unsettled, with indications that very windy conditions and widespread rain could arrive next Wednesday (New Year’s Day).
Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather has also noted the possibility of a New Year’s storm.
Posting on X, he said that there was “..still uncertainty on track and intensity of storm New Year’s Day but models do increase the length and depth of cold snap as storm pulls colder air in behind it.”
He also observed that weather models were predicting that the storm could bring either rain or snowfall depending on how the weather system progresses.
Regardless, a cold snap is expected across much of Northern Europe as this weather system moves in.
“It’s all eyes on New Year’s Day weather models as risk of storm increases but the details still vary on models with position of storm varying,” he posted.
“One model brings wind and rain while the other brings risk of snow. Either way cold will follow after!”
