The 2024 Donegal Camino was by far the most successful iteration of the charity walk to date.
Organisers say they raised an incredible €122,145.30 which is on its way to the Cancer Care West Centre in Letterkenny.
This year’s Camino saw almost €40,000 more raised than 2023’s total, bringing the overall amount of money raised via the Camino since its inception in 2020 to a staggering €279,295.30.
The week-long walk brought together 735 participants from across the world, with Irish walkers being joined by those from the UK, Scotland, Australia, France and the USA.
“We’re beyond proud of our contribution to the Cancer Care West Donegal Support Centre in Letterkenny,” said Noel Cunningham, the Chair of the Donegal Camino who also sits on the board of Cancer Care West.
“The unfortunate reality is that cancer diagnosis is becoming more widespread and especially here in Donegal and our focus on the Donegal Camino is to continue our mission to raise much needed funds for the Cancer Care West Support Centre to support our Donegal families, neighbours and friends on their cancer journey, while also profiling the stunning walks and hikes we have in our beautiful county under the umbrella of the Donegal Camino.”
The funds raised by the Donegal Camino have been used to increase the availability of counselling services and support programmes to include pilates, reflexology and relaxation classes amongst other services for those on a cancer journey in Donegal.
“We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this year’s Donegal Camino fundraising event such a success,” said CEO of Cancer Care West Richard Flaherty.
“To our dedicated organisers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and to each and every participant who walked with us – thank you for your incredible support and commitment.”
“This is a truly unique event that brings people from all walks of life together to share an unforgettable journey and support a cause that matters to us all. Thanks to the event’s success, we can continue our vital work, bringing hope and support to Donegal cancer patients and their families. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Camino, where we can join again to create a lasting impact.”
