Gardaí in Co Donegal have issued a stern warning to motorists after revealing that 16 drivers have been caught driving under the influence of an intoxicant in recent days.
All the drivers were arrested across the Donegal Division after being suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The drivers were caught over the past week between December 16th and today.
A Garda spokesperson pleaded with drivers not to risk their own lives and the lives of others by taking alcohol or drugs before getting behind the wheel.
“Please do not ever drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Do not risk your own life and the lives of other road users by making irresponsible decisions when it comes to road safety.
“Slow down on the roads if you are travelling home for Christmas, out shopping or visiting relations. It would be better to reach your destination safely and late than not at all.
“We hope that everybody has a safe and a happy Christmas both on and off the roads.”
To date a total of 18 people have lost their lives on Donegal roads so far this year.
This compares to just ten for all of last year.
Head of the Donegal Garda Traffic Corps, Inspector Seamus McGonigle, pleaded with drivers to take all necessary measures to be as safe as possible when driving.
