Members of the Letterkenny Shotokan Karate Club wrapped up their year with students receiving their new belts after successful grading exams.
Students worked hard to prepare for the grading exam, with junior and senior members alike trying to make their next steps towards a coveted black belt, with Sensei John Wilkie, Christopher O’Donnell and Peter Ogle on the judging panel.
A grand total of 40 students achieved their next belt after plenty of hard graft.
But that wasn’t all that was happening on Saturday, there were also medals handed out for the display of best spirit of the day. Scott Sweeney, Lily Gallier and Vibhas Akella were all awarded medals from each of the sensei for their great efforts.
The biggest award of all, however, was the Gillen Perpetual Cup to the student of the year which was awarded to Teresa Gallagher for 2024. Named after Jimmy Gillen, founder of the club back in the 1960s, the cup is given to the winner in recognition of their efforts and accomplishments throughout the year.
The Karate Club also wished to extend their thanks to the Letterkenny Community Centre, where they are based.
Liam O’Donnell, manager of the Community Centre, was in attendance at the grading day and presented a speech to attendees about the importance and need for a much-needed new extension – with fundraising under a “buy-a-brick” campaign underway.
“2025 is going to be even better!” said Sensei John Wilkie after the ceremony.
“For anyone thinking ahead about new year resolutions, the Letterkenny Shotokan Karate Club will be back in January and everyone is welcome, all ages, all abilities. Remember, turning up is half the battle won.”
