Over 600 drivers were caught speeding in a 24-hour period by Gardaí across the latest National Slow Down Day.
281 of those detections were made by Gardaí at nationwide checkpoints, including over a dozen detections by Donegal Gardaí yesterday.
Some examples of high speed detections over yesterday made by Gardaí included:
- 73km/h in a 50km/h zone on Pontoon Road, Castlebar, Co. Mayo
- 82km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R838, Cookstown, Dublin 24
- 108km/h in a 80km/h zone on the N6, Baile An Phoill, Gaillimh
- 136km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N18 Ballinacurra Weston, Co. Limerick
Gardaí say that while this number is a notable decrease versus other National Slow Down Days this year, they are still urging motorists to be more cautious on the roads in the lead-up to Christmas.
“While this is a welcome reduction on detection rates during previous National Slow Down Days and we appreciate the public’s role in this, we continue to ask that drivers are mindful of the need to slow down especially over the busy Christmas period.”
