December 20, 2024

A man has appeared in court charged with making threats to kill a neighbour in a live Facebook video.

Matthew Boyle appeared at Letterkenny District Court charged with making the threats to Paul Gibson.

Judge Eiteain Cunningham said this was a serious charge.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins said that he has known the accused for a while and described him as a “gentleman with difficulties.”

The Judge replied that she would have to consider if the threats are genuine.

Sergeant Collins said that it was “highly unlikely” that anybody would take the threats as “viable” and said the accused had some “intellectual difficulties.”

The accused, aged 32 and of Parkview in Raphoe, was in court for the hearing.

He is charged that he did without lawful excuse, make to Paul Gibson a threat, intending the said  Paul Gibson  to believe it would be carried out, to kill or cause him serious harm.

The charge is Contrary to Section 5 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

Judge Cunningham added “My position on threats is that they should not be made – good, bad or indifferent.”

The Judge adjourned the case until January 20th to consider the case.
