The SVP shop in Buncrana has issued a plea to halt ‘almost nightly’ thefts from its doors.
The thrift shop on Lower Main Street has experienced a series of thefts where donations left outside at night are stolen. The bags are searched and the “rags” unfit for sale are dumped back at the shop.
“This was not an isolated incident, it’s now almost a nightly occurrence. It’s not just bags but any donations, everything outside the shop is stolen,” said the store team.
The team is asking members of the public who are generously donating items to always make sure to do so during opening hours.
“Basically if it’s given straight into the shop, it can’t be stolen, and therefore the donations you kindly give will reach and be used for those they are intended for,” they said.
“We are appealing for all donations to be made when shop is open Monday-Friday 9.30-5.00pm and Saturdays 11.00am – 4.00pm.”
Christmas is the busiest time of the year for SVP as they seek to help struggling families. Those hardest hit will include one parent-families, low-income workers; households on fixed social welfare incomes; low-income households in rural areas; people with disabilities and their carers.
