Gardaí nationwide have already carried out over 100,000 checkpoints this year to date, issued 184,000 on-the-spot fines and seized more than 29,000 vehicles for road traffic offences.
However, they have asked for the public’s help too to make sure that those using Irish roads all make it home alive this Christmas and New Year.
“Every hour of every day so far this year we have arrested a motorist on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” a garda spokesperson said.
“If you take drugs or drink alcohol before getting into the car to drive, you are playing roulette with your own life and the lives of others.
Our Christmas and New Year Road Safety Operation is now underway across the country so please spread this important message among friends, family, colleagues and neighbours.”
