Four Masters 1-15 v 2-09 Glenswilly
By Charlie Collins
Four Masters beat Glenswilly in cracking Under 21A Championship Final this afternoon.
Four Masters raced to a four point lead in the opening quarter as Glenswilly were finding it difficult to contain the pre-match favorites. After Glenswilly had finally opened their account the Donegal town men added two more quick points to lead by 0-06 to 0-01 and looking dangerous with every attack. Glenswilly hit back again with two points to leave three between them 0-06 to 0-03.
This was followed by three goals in quick succession, with Masters striking the first to leave six points in it.
Glenswilly’s response was immediate and impressive however with two goals in less than two minutes to leave it level at half-time, 1-06 to 2-03 and the Glen men right back in the game.
Glenswilly took the lead for the first time in the game with the opening score of a second-half and although Four Masters equalized immediately the Glen men added the next two points to lead by 2-06 to 1-07, and this game was set up for a cracking second-half to decide which of these two excellent teams would be the Under 21A champions for 2024.
Mark Bonner made a three point game but Daniel McGinley replied immediately as the tension increased , 2-07 to 1-08 and very soon it was level with Four Masters points from Callum McCrea and Conor Reid’s free, 2-07 to 1-10. The scores were now coming thick and fast, Conor Gallagher McCahill gave Masters the lead, Reid Kelly equalized but Conor Meehan quickly restored Masters’ lead again, 1-12 to 2-08.
Meehan added another point from a free to leave two between and with time running out could Glenswilly respond again?
Shane Tinney’s free left just one it again with less than four minutes left but Seanan Carr’s free gave Four Masters some breathing space and when Senan Quinn added another for Masters it was all over, and this outstanding game between two excellent teams ended 1-15 to 2-09 in Four Masters favour – but with Glenswilly contributing so much to a brilliant contest.
They will be very disappointed to have lost two finals in a row but both these clubs look to have a bright future ahead with the young talent available to them.
