Fine Gael Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh says the party needs to revisit its strategy in Donegal after this election.
From the tally, it seems almost certain the party will not retain outgoing TD Joe McHugh’s seat.
Nikki Bradley and John McNulty have just 9% of the tally vote, down 5% since 2020.
Cllr Kavanagh said the performance was no reflection on the candidates, who had an uphill battle in this campaign.
“It’s unacceptable for us, when you look around the country and see how well we do, It’s unacceptable in Donegal when we are down to three councillors and no TD,” Cllr Kavanagh said.
Cllr Kavanagh said the party needs to regroup, assign people to the right positions and begin to plan for the local elections now.
“The only positive I can take out of this is it’s an opportunity,” said Fine Gael stalwart Kavanagh.
“We need to have cool heads. There is a danger that people can get despondent or angry.”
