Over the last six weeks, students from Loreto Secondary School Letterkenny have been taking part in a programme of inclusion with St Bernadette’s Special School.
The initiative allows students from both schools to learn new skills, see possible careers and make new friends.
“This programme is a great opportunity to unite the two schools and we hope we can get more people involved and keep this amazing programme going throughout the year,” a spokesperson for the school said.
During week two, the students took part in decorating cupcakes with special guest Swattee, business owner of Cakes By Swattie, who made the delicious cupcakes, icing and Halloween themed fondant decorations. The demonstration was very successful, and the students even used these skills for the Great Bake-off.
During week three, students from both schools went shopping for their ingredients in preparation for the Great Bake-off. They used their skills of identification and searching to locate the ingredients in the shop. As well as that the students got to be independent and see how to go shopping and stick to a list with their partners.
On week four, the schools were fortunate enough to go to Castlegrove Country House Hotel. They would like to pay a special thanks to Caroline Sweeney and her team for such an enjoyable day.
Upon entering, the students had a lovely assortment of food and they thoroughly enjoyed this. After having a look around the hotel, the students from St Bernadettes made lemon cheesecake with the help of the lovely staff and Loreto students. They turned out amazing and were certainly very delicious. There was a competition, judged by Mr Haran, Principal from St Bernadette’s, and after a very tight competition a winner was chosen. After all of this, they enjoyed a beautiful walk outside the country house.
In week six, the schools took part in a Great Bake-off. This was a very enjoyable experience. They had two hours to produce 12 cupcakes. All the cupcakes turned out amazing from vanilla to chocolate but there could only be one winner, which was Cora and Cassie, with runner up Joe and Georgia.
