The Ballybofey, Stranorlar & District Historical Society will launch the 11th volume of their bumper annual next week.
This year’s publication will be unveiled at their monthly talk in Henderson Hall, Stranorlar (F93 XV29), on Monday 25th November at 8pm.
The society is delighted to announce that the articles this year include the subjects of some of their best talks which took place throughout the year. These include Arlene Crampsie on The Great Famine, Joe Doherty on the early days of Finn Harps and Caroline Carr on Donegal Weather Events.
In addition, Kathleen Phelan celebrates the life of JCT McDonagh, a local man who founded the Donegal Historical Society. She tells his story in two articles – one on his life, the second on the fascinating Penal Cross at his grave in Stranorlar.
Pat Holland and Reverend Raymond Blair continue an unbroken run back to the first annual with contributions on Charles Parnell and Samuel Seaton respectively.
The local connections of Tony nominated actress, Rosaleen Linehan, are investigated. There are also the interesting and tragic stories of local Tunnel Tigers, Michael mcMenamin and his brother in law Joe Boyle, which are definitely worth a read.
Copies of the new annual, and previous editions, will be available for purchase on the night and later in those shops that normally stock them. We hope to see you there!
Membership of the historical group is rising all the time, so if you are interested in local history, come and join us.
Meetings and talks take place on the fourth Monday of the month.
