Planning permission has been granted for the construction of an Islamic Cultural Centre in Letterkenny.
Donegal County County Council this week gave the green light to Letterkenny Islamic Association Clg for the development at Lisnennan, on the outskirts of the town.
The proposed development will see the construction of an Islamic Cultural Centre, consisting of ground floor and first floor mezzanine prayer hall areas (male/female), a coffee dock, sandwich bar, offices, meeting room and kitchenette.
Some residents raised concerns over potential traffic congestion and impact on the local nature and habitat.
One objector noted: “There is also a specific concern with noise pollution related to islamic centers, specifically the practice of broadcasting calls to prayer over the local area. By its very nature, this is a very disruptive activity and has caused issues in other areas where such centers have been permitted to be built.”
However, the council granted planning permission, subject to 18 conditions.
