November 21, 2024

A drunk Fanad man who presented at Letterkenny University Hospital despite not being ill has been fined after appearing in court.

James Carr of Rinboy was found drunk at the hospital just after midnight on March 19th, 2023.

He was charged with being intoxicated when he appeared at Letterkenny District Court.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that Gardai spoke with the accused on the scene, asked to leave and a fixed penalty notice was issued but never paid.

The accused man had no previous convictions.

His solicitor, Mr Michael Shiel, said his client had been very drunk and had no recollection of the event at all.

He added that he was aware of the court’s view of the treatment of frontline workers and this type of behaviour.

Judge Eitean Cunningham agreed adding “The doctors and nurses are already under severe pressure without having to deal with someone like this.”

Despite being a first offence, she said she was not opting for a donation to charity as is normally the case because of the seriousness of the offence.

She convicted Carr and fined him €150.
