Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty says more must be done to address areas where water supply is “extremely poor” in Donegal.
He made the comments as the Government announced an additional €6 million investment in Group Water Schemes, which the Sinn Fein Finance spokesperson welcomed.
However despite this investment, Doherty says there are areas of the county that still have no running water, or extremely poor water pressure.
Speaking today, Deputy Doherty said:
“The news that there will be €6 million investment in Group Water Schemes in Donegal is very welcome.”
“The €2.5 million in funding to improve the water infrastructure in Maghera is particularly welcome.”
“This is an area which I know was desperately crying out for attention from government and Uisce Éireann. Both my party colleague Cllr Brian Carr and I have repeatedly pushed to get solutions for the people of the area in this regard.”
“However, too many places in Donegal with poor to no water supply continue to be ignored by government and Uisce Éireann.”
“One example of this is the Glenfin area where there are about 40 houses in total that do not have any access to running water at all and which are relying on wells to bring water to their homes.”
“The solution to this problem is to connect two water supplies, connecting Lough Anna to the existing supply and this work should be done as a matter of urgency.”
“On the Commeen side of Glenfin, the water pressure is extremely bad. When asked about this by Sinn Féin, via email and in person, Uisce Éireann repeatedly say that the matter is being investigated.”
“When asked about the complete lack of water to houses, Uisce Éireann flatly refuse to commit to any plans to rectify the situation.”
“This simply isn’t good enough. Action must be taken. Uisce Éireann and government know fine well just how bad the situation is.”
“Although today’s news is welcome, more needs to be done for Donegal and I will continue to press for action to be taken.”
