Plea to landowners to cut hedges after lorry windscreen smashed

Landowners are being urged to take responsibility for hedge cutting after a lorry collided with overhanging branches in the Glenties Municipal District.

Councillor Michael McClafferty is reminding people that it’s not the council’s responsibility to cut hedges, speculating that “it’s only a matter of time” before insurance companies hold landowners liable for damages caused.

In the latest incident, a lorry reportedly sustained significant damage, including a smashed windscreen and a broken mirror, due to overhanging branches.

Cllr McClafferty said that a local school bus operator has aired concerns about the potential risks to student safety, warning that certain routes may become impassable if overgrown hedges are not addressed promptly.

“I would once again appeal to people to look at their properties and if trees or bushes need cutting, please cut them before it’s too late via an accident or otherwise,” said Cllr. McClafferty.
