A plaque has been unveiled at the graveside of one of Donegal’s greatest athletes.
John Johnny Mór O’Gallachoir achieved huge success in a range of sporting disciplines during his lifetime.
Some of those achievements have now been set in stone on a plaque at his grave where he rests at Cill Bhride cemetery at Cruit Island.
Family and friends gathered yesterday at John Johnny Mor’s graveside to a man who was both an Ulster and Irish champion in a number of sports including the shot put and the discus.
The occasion, who was blessed by Fr Pat Ward, was organised by Kincasslagh woman Brid Baska, whose grandfather was a first cousin of Johnny’s and who felt the athlete never got the recognition he deserved.
Among those in attendance were the family of John’s brother Paddy Johnny Mor, who traveled from Boyle and Galway for the unveiling.
Brendan O’Donnell spoke on behalf of Lifford and Strabane Athletic Club.
Pat the Cope Gallagher, a relation of John Johnny Mor, also spoke at the unveiling.
