Funding of €6,216,607 has been allocated to the Atlantic Technological University under two government funding schemes for research and infrastructure upgrades.
€2,158,008 is being made available to ATU through the Higher Education Research Equipment Grant (HEREG) and will assist higher education institutions to purchase world-leading research equipment that will serve the research and development needs of Irish industry.
A devolved capital grant of €4,058,599 has also been allocated to support small-scale building works including energy efficiency and decarbonisation upgrades, health and safety works, access upgrades, refurbishment and equipment purchase or renewal including ICT.
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Patrick O’Donovan TD said: “Our higher education institutions face substantial challenges in meeting climate targets and this grant will support them in making energy efficiency and decarbonisation upgrades.”
The Minister said: “The Higher Education Research Equipment Grant will not only allow universities to upgrade research equipment but also purchase new or additional research equipment.
“The Devolved Capital Grant will allow universities to invest in minor capital works programmes, refurbishment and renewal of equipment and will ensure their facilities remain up-to-date, fit for purpose and respond to climate objectives.”
Fine Gael Senator and general election candidate for Donegal Nikki Bradley said: “This is further evidence of Fine Gael’s commitment to providing the resources necessary for Donegal students and university staff to access the best facilities and equipment to allow them to flourish.
“We all know the value and emphasis placed on research and innovation by multi-nationals and our own indigenous SMEs. ATU continuing to be an important hub of Ireland’s research drive will help attract investment and jobs into Donegal for many years to come.
“ATU is an important pillar of the community in Donegal. I look forward to seeing the fruits of these grants and to continuing to work closely with them,” Senator Bradley concluded.
