Man caught with €7,600 of crime cash to be sentenced

November 6, 2024

A man has pleaded guilty at Letterkenny Circuit Court to having proceeds of crime to the value of €7,600.

Ben McGuigan appeared before Judge John Aylmer.

McGuigan spoke only to plead guilty during the brief hearing.

He is charged with one count of being in possession of property being the proceeds of criminal conduct.

The 25-year-old is charged that on October 16, 2020, at a place unknown in the State, was in possession of property that was the proceeds of crime, namely €7,600 or thereabouts, being money credited to an AIB account in his name.

McGuigan is represented by Mr Peter Nolan BL, instructed by solicitor Mr Rory O’Brien.

Mr Nolan said his client, of Castlecurragh Heath, Blanchardstown, has no previous convictions and has been “seriously affected by the experience and of the individuals who were involved”.

Mr Nolan said McGuigan was “living under that cloud until today when he confessed to Mr O’Brien what actually happened”.

Mr Nolan told Judge Aylmer that he is concerned for the wellbeing of his client and asked for a probation report and a psychiatric report to be prepared.

Judge Aylmer granted the application and asked that a probation report include a recommendation on McGuigan’s suitability for community service.

The case was adjourned to the next session of Letterkenny Circuit Court in early 2025 when McGuigan is to be sentenced.
