Two books and a short film detailing stories from Tory Island will be launched on the island later this week.
French author Saskia Levy-Rodgers, who is now a resident of the island itself, is the writer and producer of both the books and the short film.
Her new book, S’Tory Book, is a collection of short stories inspired by the Island’s folklore, history and daily life, with legends such as Lugh, Balor and Colmcille featured.
The stories also explore the island’s painters, shipwrecks, lighthouse and its unique heritage.
One review for the book from Jo Wilson of the Tintean Magazine, described the book thusly: “For the disaspora and the many (Irish) ‘celtophiles’, this book is a delicious composite dish of adventure with a modern-day family along a gusty storied shore.”
The short film, Tory Island Chronicles, consists of a number of discussions about life on Tory Island, identity, culture and language.
As part of the project, school students were also asked to create their own chronicles about life on Tory Island.
Tory Island Chronicles has also been converted into book form, with some further discussion on the topics raised by the author as well.
The launch of both books and the short film will take place at the Tory Island Social Club on the evening of Thursday the 7th of October at 8pm.
