Gardaí say they are disappointed with the public’s response to their Bank Holiday road safety campaign.
It’s after over 2,000 people were caught speeding nationwide between last Friday and Monday.
218 drivers were also arrested for driving under the influence of drink or drugs, via the almost 900 Mandatory Intoxicant Checkpoints Gardaí operated throughout the weekend.
Some of the most egregious speeding incidents in the country were also seen in County Donegal, including one motorist was clocked at 157 km/h in a 100km/h zone on the R238 at Tromaty, Quigleys Point. Another Donegal driver was detected doing 95 km/h in a 60km/h zone on the N13 at Carrowreagh, Bridgend.
“It is disappointing that in spite of public awareness campaigns and widespread efforts among both Gardaí and relevant partners such as the Road Safety Authority urging motorists to slow down – drivers continue to travel at dangerously excessive speeds on Irish roads,” Gardaí said in a statement.
“Anyone prepared to drive at the speeds that were detected over the Bank Holiday weekend has the potential to destroy lives, including their own.”
This message from Gardaí comes as yet another life was lost on Donegal’s roads yesterday evening.
A man aged in his 60s was killed after a single-vehicle crash in Kerrykeel.
