A team from the veterinary nursing programme of ATU Donegal are setting off for Cambodia this Friday with the charity Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) to save lives against Rabies.
Lecturer Susie Law (pictured above) and students Ciara Fox, Emer Tinney and Megan Ferry will spend a week volunteering with vaccination teams in the city of Phnom Penh.
Vaccinating dogs against rabies and educating people about the dangers is a key mission of the WVS.
Rabies kills approximately 59,000 people globally every year and Cambodia has one of the highest rabies death rates per capita of any country in the world. Children are most at risk.
The ATU Donegal team will work on Mission Rabies, which is a mass vaccination drive involving local government and partner charities and international volunteers to protect two million people living in Phnom Penh from the deadly disease.
Susie said: “Around 300 vaccination teams, which includes myself and three Vet Nurse students from Donegal, will vaccinate as many dogs as we can, educate children and adults on the dangers of Rabies and try and reduce the death rate of this preventable disease.”
