Donegal man to stand trial for sexually assaulting woman

A Donegal man has been sent forward to stand trial for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman.

The man, who is aged in his 30s and cannot be named for legal reasons at this time, appeared before Letterkenny District Court.

Garda Gillian Page gave evidence of serving a book of evidence on the man.

He is charged that, on a date in 2022, at a named location in County Donegal, that he did sexually assault the woman.

The charge is contrary to Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act 1990, as amended by Section 37 of the Sex Offenders Act 2001.

Sergeant Maurice Doyle told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has consented to the accused being sent forward to the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham made an order returning the man for trial and administered the alibi warning. A section 56 order, relating to videos of interviews, was also made.

Solicitor Mr Patsy Gallagher was granted legal aid and two counsel were assigned.

An order preventing the man from being named was granted by Judge Cunningham.
