Contracts have been signed today on an €8.9 project for 34 social houses in Castlefinn.
Habinteg Housing Association (Ireland) chairperson Packie Keeney officially signed the contract for the project which is being funded through the Department of Housing’s Capital Assistance Scheme (CAS) and administered by Donegal Co Council.
The construction process is expected to take 82 weeks, with the first tenants anticipated to move into their new homes by June 2026.
These homes will play a crucial role in addressing the growing demand for social housing in the region, offering secure and affordable accommodation to those most in need.
This new development expands Habinteg’s housing portfolio, which currently includes 53 units at Ballyduff Park, Lifford, Co Donegal.
Stephen Shevlin, CEO of Habinteg has said that the Castlefinn project demonstrates Habinteg’s commitment to expanding social housing opportunities in Donegal, continuing its mission of providing quality housing for vulnerable and low-income individuals and families.
Dorrian Construction (DCL) has been appointed as the main contractor for the construction as they have built a solid reputation in Donegal and beyond for delivering high quality homes.
A spokesperson said “They have a proven track record of completing projects on time and to a high standard, and they are committed to ensuring the timely delivery of this vital social housing development.
“We would like to thank all who made this project possible and especially the staff at Donegal Co Council and the Department of Housing for their commitment to ensuring that this project was approved and received the necessary funding.”
General Election candidate Pat the Cope Gallagher also welcomed the project.
He said “I have a long association with Habinteg Housing Association Ireland as I was Minister of State for Environment when the 55 unit Mixed Housing development was built in Lifford and I worked closely with the Committee at that time.
“Today’s announcement is great news for Castlefinn. The 34 mixed housing units are much needed in the area and will go some way in dealing with the housing need. It is through partnerships such as these we can meet the housing needs within Donegal
“Housing is certainly a key priority as we face into this election cycle , every effort must be made to accelerate the building programme throughout Donegal .
“I am confident that Donegal County Council has the plans in place to meet the housing challenges of the county, the next Government must ensure that funding is in place to deliver more houses for the county.”
