Barred father in court after leaving sweets and card for son’s confirmation

October 21, 2024

A man has appeared in court after breaching a barring order by leaving sweets and a confirmation card for his son at his former home.

The man appeared at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court.

The court was told that the man called to the home of his former partner and their family in April 2022.

When there was no answer at the residence, the man left a bag of sweets and a confirmation card for his son on the doorstep of the house.

The man was charged with breaching a barring order by calling to the home of his ex-partner.

Solicitor for the accused man, Mr Patsy Gallagher, asked Gardai if there was anything sinister or provocative about the card.

Gardai said they were not sure as she did not believe the card had been opened.

Mr Gallagher said that two years had passed and there has been no interaction between the parties.

He added that his client was in court and was quite distressed by the situation.

Judge Ciaran Liddy said the victim had come to the court seeking protection and that the accused must appreciate the weight attached to a court order.

However, he said he accepted that this appeared to be a one-off incident.

He applied the Probation Act.
