There was great sadness earlier this week after the passing of two of the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary’s beloved animals.
Jack, Martha and Lizzie were rescued from an abusive owner, where they had been subjected to horrendous treatment and had been on the verge of starvation, and suffered what appeared to be extensive damage to their hooves.
That wasn’t all however, with the sanctuary also saying the donkeys had been cut with a grinder at some point also by their previous owner also.
After arriving at the sanctuary, it was clear they would need additional checks to ensure their long-term health.
Sadly for both Jack and Martha, the damage found when they were eventually well enough to travel for X-Rays was even more extensive than expected.
“The outcome of the X-rays was truly heartbreaking as both had suffered so much damage to the pedal bone that a normal pain free life would have been impossible,” the Donkey Sanctuary said in a post on social media.
“We had feared the worst for Jack from the beginning but Martha’s X-rays were truly shocking as she was on her feet everyday & we had high hopes for her recovery.”
“The very sad decision was made to let them go to the rainbow bridge & tonight Lizzie stands alone as the only survivor of this brutal treatment.”
While luckily Lizzie is doing “as well as can be expected” according to the sanctuary, she won’t have her two siblings along with her.
