An original new play on a very topical and contentious issue is set to thrill drama lovers at the Balor Theatre next week.
Rehearsals are at an advanced stage for the award-winning Butt Drama Circle’s (BDC) production, ‘A Matter of Rights’.
The play features two award-winning BDC actors, JC Bonar and Mickey McMahon, both of whom enjoyed enormous success on the All-Ireland Drama Festival Circuit in recent years.
In this intense thriller, Bonar plays ‘Da’, who doesn’t like immigrants’. He has just served three months in prison for causing a breach of the peace while protesting outside a hostel earmarked for Asylum Seekers. McMahon plays his son, who doesn’t agree with his father’s views.
Now that ‘Da’ is back home, he is determined to have it out with his father, once and for all. This intense and powerful two-hander plays out against the backdrop of a fractured family and the fractured society that is modern Ireland.
‘A Matter of Rights’ was penned by Conor Malone.
The talented Malone was also the author of BDC’s ‘The Root of all Evil’, which reached the final last year of the prestigious All Ireland One Act Drama Festival.
The 2024 drama festival entry, ‘A Matter of Rights’, will be directed by Shaun Laverty, who also steered last year’s production to huge acclaim.
‘A Matter of Rights’ debuts on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th of October as part of a double bill at the Balor Arts Centre, Ballybofey. It will feature alongside the Balor DCA’s production of ‘TheWife, Her Cat and All The Other Stuff’, directed by Kieran Quinn and starring Andy McGranaghan.
This is set to be a very special evening of theatre indeed – curtains open for the first show at 8pm.
Tickets are available now from the Balor Box Office on 074 -9131840.
