Two bags of cocaine found on man in Letterkenny garda station

A man has been fined in court for possession of cocaine valued at €20.

Padraig Rooney (aged 34) of Sea View, Killough, Downpatrick, Co. Down, was in custody at Letterkenny Garda Station when he was subjected to a search.

Gardaí found two bags of white powder on his person.

Rooney was due before Letterkenny District Court.

The accused did not appear, but the matter was dealt with in his absence.

Detective Garda Kilgar Porter told the court that on February 25, 2023 a man known to be Rooney was in custody at the garda station when he was searched. During the course of the search, Gardaí found what they believed to be a controlled drug, cocaine, on Rooney.

Detective Garda Porter said Rooney informed him that the powder was cocaine and was for his own personal use.

Sergeant Jim Collins confirmed that Rooney has no previous convictions.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham found the facts proven. Rooney was convicted and fined €200. Judge Cunningham allowed five months to discharge the fine.
