A Donegal County Councillor has called for a review after it emerged that the county’s first static speed camera is to be moved.
The permanent speed cameras were due to be installed on the N14 Manor to Lifford Road by the end of this year.
However, it’s been decided that it will now be relocated to the N13 between Manor and Newtowncunningham.
The decision was made following an assessment process carried out through the RSA, An Gardai Siochana and the TII.
Councillors of the Letterkenny-Milford MD were informed of the move yesterday.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Donal Coyle, who has highlighted the dangers on the N14 for years, said he was “disgusted” by the move.
“I was sure the static cameras would be installed at this section of road,” he said.
Cllr Coyle cited another accident on the N14 last week in which a car went off the road at Carrickballydooey, overturned and landed in a stream.
“I certainly believe that’s where the static camera should be,” he said, calling on the council to request more.
A spokesperson for the council roads section agreed to follow up through the TII to see the reasoning behind the relocation, and to explore the options moving forward.
The plenary meeting of Donegal County Council on Monday also heard a call from Sinn Féin Cllr Terry Crossan seeking more permanent speed cameras to be installed in Donegal to help prevent further road tragedies.
Councillors were told that €9 million has been allocated in funding for up to 100 new speed cameras as part of Budget 2025. These new cameras are in addition to 58 mobile safety cameras currently operated by GoSafe.
