Several motorists were arrested over the weekend in Donegal as gardaí clamped down on serious road offences.
The Letterkenny and Buncrana districts recorded multiple dangerous driving incidents and drink/drug driving arrests in recent days, leading gardaí to once again urge people to stop putting lives at risk.
On Friday night, a driver evaded gardaí in the Letterkenny area and performed dangerous manoeuvres before they were subsequently arrested and charged to appear in court.
On Saturday, a driver was arrested at a Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoint in Letterkenny after failing a roadside breath test. They will receive a fine and face a three-month disqualification.
Another driver was arrested in the Killygordon area on Saturday after testing positive for cocaine, cannabis, and benzodiazepines. Further tests are pending.
Another driver was arrested in Letterkenny on suspicion of drink driving after being seen driving erratically. The case became more complex when the driver provided false details to Gardaí. “The reason for doing so and their true identity was soon established,” said a garda spokesperson. “A number of bench warrants were in existence for them. Court will follow.”
Gardaí continued: “Many lives are lost on the roads because of poor decisions when it comes to road safety and many families are left utterly devastated. Please do not ever drive while under the influence of alcohol/drugs as in doing so you would be risking your own life and the lives of all others you would meet.”
Meanwhile, in Buncrana, the roads policing unit arrested five motorists over the course of the weekend on suspicion of drink / drug driving.
“Gardaí continue to conduct high visibility patrols across the Buncrana District,” a spokesperson said.
“Slow down. Wear a seatbelt & don’t ever drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Help save lives on the roads by making wise decisions where road safety is concerned.”
