The aurora borealis is expected to be visible to the naked eye from Donegal this Sunday night – if the conditions are right.
The northern lights are forecast to make a strong showing across the northern hemisphere tonight, but cloud cover could disappoint many.
Forecast maps predict 10pm to be the strongest time for activity over Ireland and the UK.
The UK Met Office confirmed that a coronal mass ejection (CME) is ‘imminently expected’ at Earth.
“During hours of darkness aurora may become visible to the naked eye from Northern England and Northern Ireland northwards,” they said.
“Auroral activity should gradually lessen into the coming working week (barring new events).”
Met Eireann is forecasting a dry night with “clear spells to start tonight but it will become cloudier overnight with rain spreading from the south.” Lowest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees.
